How to Change the Nylon Line on a STIHL Line Trimmer or Grass Trimmer

STIHL is a well-known brand in outdoor power equipment, known for its dependability, power and ease of use. Even the most dependable line trimmers require maintenance from time to time, such as changing the nylon line regularly. This guide will walk you through the process step by step so you can get your STIHL line trimmer up and running quickly.

Step 1 :Prepare to replace the nylon line on a STIHL Line Trimmer

The first step is to make sure you are aware of the style of feeding mechanism of your line head.  Some older style line heads are pulled apart and manually wound, whereas many newer line heads manufactured by STIHL have an ‘easy feed’ function, meaning they do not need to be disassembled for refilling.

Step 2 : Refilling a manual line head

If you have a manually wound line head, gently pull the cover off and remove the internal spool.

Cut off a length of nylon line from your roll, usually 4 metres or so will suffice, and wind the line onto both sides of the spool in the appropriate direction according to the arrows marked on the spool.

Bent and straight shaft line trimmers spin in opposite directions, so ensuring you have the line wound on in the correct direction will allow the line to feed out properly when the head is bumped on the ground

Make sure to keep the line taut and evenly spaced while winding and make sure that the line doesn’t become tangled while winding as this can cause problems down the line.

Re-fit the spool into the head housing, making sure the line is feeding out through both eyelets, and replace the cover.

Step 3: Refilling an ‘easy feed’ line head

If you have an ‘easy feed’ style of line head, you do not need to pull these apart to refill. Simply turn the centre of the head in the correct direction until the arrows align with each other. This varies from line head to line head, so make sure you understand how your specific model works.

Take a piece of nylon line, approximately 4 metres, and feed the line into the eyelet of the line head and through the head itself until the line emerges from the opposite eyelet.  Pull the line through the head until you have two even lengths, and then turn the centre of the head until the line has wound into the spool.

That’s all there is to it! Changing out nylon line on a STIHL line trimmer may seem intimidating at first but if done correctly, it can be done quickly and easily! By following the above steps you can keep your line trimmer in top shape and help make your garden look its best.
